Every year, amateur radio enthusiasts from across the region eagerly anticipate HamCon Colorado 2025, one of the most vibrant gatherings for the radio community in the Rocky Mountains.
The journey to this year’s HamCon in Grand Junction began early on Wednesday, October 22. As dawn broke, a caravan of RMHAM and HamCon committee members set out, brimming with anticipation. John, W0VG, and Mark, N7CTM, were among the first to arrive at the event site, where they efficiently unloaded the RMHAM trailer before heading up to the stunning heights of Grand Mesa to work on the repeater. Meanwhile, Doug, K2AD, and Dave, WA1JHK, drove the Quick Response Vehicles (QRVs), loaded with supplies and equipment, across scenic Colorado to Grand Junction. The rest of the RMHAM team trickled in throughout the day, pausing for a well-earned lunch and catching up as they awaited more arrivals. Spirits were high as Dave, WA1JHK, Mark, N7CTM, and Rob, N0RPF, set up the audio/visual systems for the much-anticipated DX University sessions scheduled for Thursday. The day wrapped up with a lively dinner at Texas Roadhouse, where members shared stories and built camaraderie.
Thursday dawned with an intermediate drizzle, adding a bit of challenge—and excitement—to the day’s setup. The team worked together to assemble antennas and mount them onto the QRVs for the special W1AW/0 station, undeterred by the changing weather. As the rain came and went, more attendees filtered in, bringing fresh energy to the preparations. Behind the scenes, the audio/visual rooms took shape, setting the stage for the presentations and forums to come. Despite the damp weather, the sense of community and teamwork was unmistakable.
By Friday morning, HamCon was in full swing. Volunteers hustled to help with registration and ensure forums ran smoothly, while the special W1AW/0 station drew a steady stream of operators eager to make contacts across the country. The vendor and club area buzzed with activity, featuring a lively mix of local and visiting exhibitors. It was a day packed with learning, hands-on demonstrations, and new connections, all made possible by the tireless efforts of the HamCon Committee including many RMHAM members.
Saturday proved to be a highlight of the weekend. In addition to ongoing forums and the ever-popular W1AW/0 station, the launch of two Pico balloons electrified the crowd. These tiny, high-flying experiments captured the imagination of attendees, as people gathered outside to watch them ascend into the sky, tracking their progress with excitement. The day’s events culminated in a memorable banquet, where laughter, stories, and shared achievements were made for a truly special evening.
On Sunday, the event was ended with a standout breakfast presentation from Mark, N9EDK, who captivated the audience with insights into the Artemis mission and humanity’s next steps in space exploration. As the last prizes were awarded and farewells exchanged, the HamCon Committee including many members of the RMHAM team worked together to dismantle antennas, pack up radios, and load audio/visual gear back into the trailer. Some members began the journey home, while others lingered to rest and relax, reflecting on another successful HamCon—an event marked by teamwork, innovation, and unforgettable experiences.
Thanks to the RMHAM members who attended, helped out, and participated in HamCon Colorado 2025. You helped to make it a great event.
